Upon seeing his wife Gayatri use unhygienic cloth during her periods, Lakshmikanth is upset. One day he decides to put together a machine which would make sanitary napkins affordable for the women of his village. He was eventually able to create awareness on the subject.
PadMan is based on the book ‘The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad’ by Twinkle Khanna which is inspired by the real-life story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a Tamil Nadu based Social Activist, who created a sanitary napkin machine so that village women could afford sanitary pads.
Akshay Kumar was never the first option for the role of ‘PadMan’. Twinkle Khanna had other actors in mind for the Padmans role, but she eventually cast Akshay Kumar.
`Padman` is the first Indian movie to be screened at The Oxford Union.
‘PadMan’ is the only second Bollywood film which was granted access to shoot inside the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City.
‘PadMan’ is the first collaboration with director R Balki, who has made films like ‘Cheeni Kum’ and ‘Paa’.

It was banned in Pakistan as the subject was considered taboo. Central Board of Film Censors denied to give the No-Objection Certificate to the film and said, "we cannot allow a film whose name, subject and story are not acceptable in our society." They did not allow the Pakistani film distributors to purchase the film rights and gave the following statement "The film is ruining Islamic traditions, history, and culture." Film posters were removed from cinema hall. Few Pakistani women protested this decision by sending pictures while holding sanitary pads to the Pakistani censor board.
The first trailer was released on 15 December 2017. The trailer began trending on Twitter with the hashtag #PadManTrailer. Akshay Kumar casually trying to wear a sanitary napkin and the other handing them to his sister started to trend. Another poster was released on 25 December which shows Kumar holding cotton in his hand with words like "Fighter, Genius, Innovation, Unreal Man, No Shame, Real Problem, and Passion". It was called a "unique poster" by Times Of India.
Padman went on to be screened at Oxford, which became the first Indian film to be showcased at the prestigious university. The film is based on Twinkle Khanna book and she also happens to be the producer. She was invited to the Oxford Union as a speaker and she shared the great news on her social media handles.
