Baahubali 2: The Conclusion: Dubbed South Films to re-release in Hindi

The phenomenal success of Baahubali 2 has now opened doors for many South Indian films in pan India audience’s cinema experience. The S Rajmouli film has become the highest grossing film of all times, surpassing collections of Hindi films like Dangal.

With such mega success, many South films are also vouching to walk the same road. An example of such a film is Kadamban which has been re-released in Hindi in spite of being an average grosser in Tamil. Analysts say that the decision to re-release even a not-so-successful film in Hindi has a lot to do with the way South Indian cinema is being perceived today. Starring Aryan and Catherine Tresa, Kadamban is a story of a group of tribals who wanted to save their forests from exploitation by businessmen. The Tamil film released on 14th April 2017.

The fact that the lead actors have no fan power in pan India is not a determent. Maybe, the producers believe that when a so-called nobody in pan-India like Prabhas could make the audiences come to the theatre, other lesser-known actors can do the same. Moreover, the film promises action, though not of the same scale as Baahubali, obviously. The Hindi version of the film is to release on16th June along with the release of Yash Raj Films Bankchor, Kumar Mangat’s Guest in London and Diljit Dosanjh‘s Punjabi biggie Super Singh, which is expected to have a good opening. That’s not all! Salman Khan‘s Tubelight is releasing on 23rd June. All this competition from big Bollywood banners and stars might make it hard for a film like Kadamban to stand anywhere close to them.

This is definitely not the first time that such a thing has happened. Whenever a big film in regional cinema does a good business, there comes a trend to replicate the same success in Hindi, as it was done till the 1970s.  It doesn’t happen anymore. A case in point is the Hindi dubbed version Rudhramadevi starring Anushka Shetty and Rana Daggubati, who also starred in Baahubali. But the film bombed without any trace of it at the box office. It has to be a calculated risk at the end of the day.
