Why IIFA 2017 was all about Stardom and not about Merit!

Sunday came as a special night for many Bollywood stars in New York at the 18th IIFA Awards. While the nominations did include films like Udta Punjab, many other masterpieces were conveniently left out.

Shakun Batra & Ayesha DeVitre won awards for Best Story for Kapoor & Sons. But, movies like Aligarh, Raman Raghav 2.0 and Phobia were, surprisingly, not even nominated.

Shahid Kapoor & Alia Bhatt bagged the Best Actor & Actress respectively for their roles in Udta Punjab. But Manoj Bajpayee did not receive a nomination for his stupendous performance in Aligarh. The same holds true for Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Raman Raghav 2.0 which, in spite of being powerful and multi-layered, were left out of nominations. Radhika Apte’s Phobia found no mention anywhere in the award functions.

The nominations for the Best Film Category also felt superficial considering how one of the biggest 2016 hits ‘Airlift’ starring Akshay Kumar & Nimrat Kaur was not nominated while, on the other hand, Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was nominated in the category.

Many critically and commercially successful films with good content were omitted in the IIFA. Some of these are Aamir Khan’s `Dangal’, Irrfan Khan starrer ‘Madaari’ and Vidya Balan’s Kahaani 2 which were absent from the entire awards night without a single nomination in any category!
