Bollywood actresses in villainous roles are something seen once in a blue moon. Typically taken to be damsels in distress, actresses have had a hard time proving their merit as dark, edgy characters, capable of great cruelty.

We take a look at 7 such actresses who have spilled great venom on screen.

1.Kajol (Gupt) –


The mystery and the suspense of a murder were so thrilling that the audience was left to keep guessing till the end of the film over the identity of the killer with numerous suspects abound. Kajol, who played a psychopathic lover in the film, played the role to perfection at a time when actresses were mere sidekicks. The role turned out to be a career-defining one for her and she became the first actress to win a Filmfare for the Negative role.

2.Priyanka Chopra (Aitraaz) –


PeeCee was new in the industry and experimented with this movie. Exploring the intricacies of female desire, she played the role of a seductive woman seducing Akshay Kumar`s character who plays her employee and ex-boyfriend. Priyanka was highly appreciated for her performance and the risk she took with such a bold role.

3.Bipasha Basu (Jism)


She played a sultry seductress in this Mahesh Bhatt flick who deals with her loneliness by seducing a young man. Never before had female power and sexuality risen to such heights as with this film. Though shrouded in controversy and labeling Bipasha, she nailed the role of this femme fatale.

4.Mahie Gill (Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster) –


She was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in the movie, which again, explored the dark side of female sexuality. She played the role of a married man who, with her calculating charm, seduces a henchman, played by Randeep Hooda and then, gets him killed. Playing the Begum of Nawab, her performance was highly appreciated.

5.Nadira (Julie) –


A classic vamp of Hindi cinema, Nadira’s expressions were enough to intimidate people. At a time when women had stereotypical roles to portray, Nadira won the audiences over with her expressions, tough exterior, and confidence. Nadira won a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress, for her role as Julie`s mother Margaret, `Maggie`. She was also the first Indian actress to own a Rolls Royce.

6.Lalita Pawar (Sau Din Saas Ke)


The evil mother-in-law found reflection in this movie depicting the relationship between a newly-wed bride and her evil mother-in-law. Lalita Pawar was always famous for playing character roles and her performance as Manthara in the 90s Ramanand Sagar Ramayan earned her fame and appreciation. She used to appear in lead roles till 1942 when an accidental slap on her face left her with facial paralysis during the shooting of the film Jang-E-Azadi.

7.Aruna Irani (Beta) –


An actress of substance, Aruna Irani nailed the role of the manipulative stepmother in the movie Beta where she played Anil Kapoor’s step-mother who robs him of family property and tries to poison him too. Of course, towards the climax, the character has a change of heart.
