Some films are inspired by real-life events, other film industries while some movies are adapted from books. In these films, literature and movies go hand in hand. The author’s narration and intricate work of literature are what the film’s script depicts. The filmmakers render a platform for the book-lovers to visualize the minute details of the book, their film is adapted from.

Here’s a list of top 5 Bollywood movies adapted from books:

1.Kai Po Che:-


Abhishek Kapoor’s ‘Kai Po Che’ is based on the novel ‘The Three Mistakes of my life’ by Chetan Bhagat. The movie stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkummar Rao and Amit Sadh in lead roles. The friendship-drama film revolves around the lives of the three main characters. Their lives changes after the 2001 Gujarat earthquake and Godhra train burning which sparked instant riots in the city of Ahmedabad. The film portrays how communal hatred and religious politics tarnishes friendship and innocence.

2.Haider:-


Haider is a crime-tragedy directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. The film features Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu and Kay Kay Menon in prominent roles. This movie is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and also based on Basharat Peer’ Curfewed Night. The storyline is set amidst the insurgency-hit Jammu and Kashmir conflicts of 1995.

3.7 Khoon Maaf:-


The Vishal Bhardwaj film is adapted from the short story, Susanna’s Seven Husbands by Ruskin Bond. Priyanka Chopra is the female lead in the movie supported by an outstanding cast of Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan, Annu Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham and Usha Uthup. PeeCee plays the role of a woman who has an unending quest to find true love in her life. In this journey, she kills her seven husbands. Ruskin Bond curated the story for the film adaptation.

4.Devdas:-


The 2002 classic is based on the 1917 novel ‘Devdas’ by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit play the lead roles in the film. The film portrays undying love between a wealthy law graduate played by SRK and his childhood love played by Aishwarya. This venture of Sanjay Leela Bhansali has won numerous awards and recognition.

5.Guide:-


The 1965 film was a collaboration between Tad Danielewski, an American-Polish filmmaker, and Vijay Anand.  The movie stars Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman in lead roles. It is based on the novel ‘The Guide’ by R. K. Narayan.
