Bollywood’s first female superstar Sridevi’s untimely passing has left everyone in a state of shock, more so the B-Town, who saw the 54-year-old in many events recently. An outpouring of grief and disbelief occurred when news of her demise first broke out. Her brother-in-law actor Sanjay Kapoor’s confirmation led to what can be dubbed as “the darkest day” for Bollywood and South Indian cinema.
Amitabh Bachchan`s premonic tweet left everyone in dismay as he tweeted barely an hour after her death, “Don’t know why, feeling a strange restlessness.” Soon after, as news spread in the wee hours of February 25, actors like Priyanka Chopra, Aamir Khan, Preity Zinta and Jacqueline Fernandez too posted heartbreaking tweets on her sudden demise. She tweeted – “An absolute icon. Gone too soon, #Sridevi. Too soon...”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Kovind too expressed their condolences on Twitter. “Shocked to hear of passing of movie star Sridevi. She has left millions of fans heartbroken. Her performances in films such as Moondram Pirai, Lamhe, and English Vinglish remain an inspiration for other actors. My condolences to her family and close associates #PresidentKovind”.
PM Modi tweeted, ‘Saddened by the untimely demise of noted actor Sridevi. She was a veteran of the film industry, whose long career included diverse roles and memorable performances. ‘My thoughts are with her family and admirers in this hour of grief. May her soul rest in peace.’
Actor Kamal Haasan who had worked with Sridevi in many Tamil hits, was all teary-eyed and heartbroken, as he left a video message expressing his grief and condolences on her sad demise. He also said that the lullaby from their Hindi film Sadma is ringing in his ears now. He wrote, “Have witnessed Sridevi’s life from an adolescent teenager to the magnificent lady she became. Her stardom was well deserved. Many happy moments with her flash through my mind including the last time I met her. Sadma’s lullaby haunts me now. We’ll miss her.” Shekhar Kapur, her director in Mr. India, too tweeted, “ Sridevi... gone. It’s like an era is over. Like life turning a new chapter. A beautiful story just ended. An amazing spirit just vanished leaving us with amazing love, memories, and incredible grief.”
Rishi Kapoor, who worked with her in 1990 hit Chandni expressed his utter shock at the news of her death. “Woken up to this tragic news. Absolute shock. Sad. Heartfelt condolences to Boney and their two daughters!” he tweeted. In memory of her, the actor changed his Twitter profile picture as well. He is not alone.
Priyanka Chopra has been tweeting a myriad of tweets including one which read, Ye Lamhe, ye pal hum har pal yaad karenge.. ye mausam chale gaye toh hum fariyad karenge.. #RIPSridevi”. One of her social media stories shows a video with “Tere Mere Hothon Pe” flute tune playing in the background. Katrina Kaif shared a pic of her sitting post work-out with a huge back-drop of Sridevi visible in the background.
Celebrities and family friends have been visiting Sridevi’s house as well as Anil Kapoor’s residence in Mumbai. Her mortal remains are yet to arrive. Sridevi is survived by two daughters Jhanvi and Khushi and husband Boney Kapoor.
