Looks like the season of biopics is upon us … Ranbir Kapoor starrer ‘Sanju all set to release on 29th of this month and Diljit Dosanjh’sSoorma to be released on July 13th.

Even as the hype of the former is at an all-time high, the release of the latter’s trailer has cinema lovers going gaga over the interesting plot, slick editing and awesome acting of the Punjabi superstar.

After watching the 2-minute and 45-second long trailer, the curiosity for the hockey star will be naturally high, not because we are a hockey-crazy nation (we should be considering it is our national sport) but the story of Sandeep Singh is so compelling.

What The Trailer Is About:

The trailer shows the different phases of the legendary hockey player`s life, starting from his childhood where he’s not fond of hockey but is forced into playing the game. His half-hearted interest towards the game earns him lashes from his coach and he considers quitting the sport.

After he transitioned to adulthood, he takes a liking for the game after meeting a beautiful hockey champion named Harpreet (played by Taapsee Pannu) and he decides to take the sport seriously and play for the national team.

After being mocked, humiliated, beaten and challenged (by Harpreet’s brother), he requests his friend to train him to be a professional hockey player and he performs wonderfully with sheer passion, conviction, dedication, and perseverance. Just as his dream of representing the national team finally taking shape, destiny has other plans for him.

On August 22nd, 2006 – just two days before the national team is about to leave for the World Cup in Germany – Singh is hit by a gunshot in the Shatabdi Express, rendering him paralyzed from the waist down. It’s apparent that he won’t recover from the injury and be able to step on the hockey field again.

Heartbroken after being forgotten by his country and abandoned by his love, he decides not to wallow in self-pity but seek help so that he can stand up again.

He not only recovered from the serious injury in just two years after the accident but established himself as the legend in the team winning the Man of the Tournament award in 2009 Sultan Azlan Cup and becoming the lead goal scorer (with 16 goals) in the 2012 London Olympics’ qualifying tournament. In 2010, the ex-captain of the national team received Arjuna Award for his achievements in the sport.

Some Facts About The Movie:

The biopic is directed by Shaad Ali (director of ‘Saathiya’, ‘Bunty Aur Babli’, ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’, ‘Kill Dil’ and ‘Ok Jaanu’) and is produced by Sony Pictures Networks India, and Chitrangada Singh’s production house – The CS Films.

Apart from Diljit Dosanjh and Taapsee Pannu, the movie has Angad Bedi as Sandeep’s brother Bikramjeet Singh; Vijay Raaz as IIS coach; Kulbhushan Kharbanda.

Shankar Ehsaan Loy is the music composer and Gulzar the lyricist.

The tagline of the movie is “The Greatest Comeback Story of the Hockey Legend Sandeep Singh” and we are waiting to watch the legend of a hockey player who went on to carve his name in the national sports history with his blood, sweat, and tears.
