Bollywood movie Padmaavat has been banned from release in Malaysia as the moral police are of concern that, it might hurt the sentiments of Muslim communities.

Malaysia`s National Film Censorship Board (LPF) has put a ban on Sanjay Leela Bhansali`s `Padmaavat` from hitting the silver screen across the nation. Chairman Mohd Zamberi Abdul Aziz said in a statement that the storyline of the film is quite offensive as it shows Muslims in a bad light. Malaysia being a majority country finds this to be a matter of grave concern. "The storyline of the film touches on the sensitivities of Islam. That in itself is a matter of grave concern in Malaysia, a Muslim-majority country," Aziz said.

It is however quite uncanny for all Muslim communities to empathize on such strong terms with an invader ( an ambitious ruler nonetheless)  from the past.

`Padmavat`, originally named Padmavati has been under attack from various groups due to a myriad of reasons, especially from Rajput outfit Shri Rajput Karni Sena. The period drama eventually released in India on January 25. Oppositions did not cease post-release as the movie faced a mix of reviews. It has been slammed by some sections for glorifying Jauhar and even showing Alauddin Khilji, the invader as a barbarian.

Padmavati ban has been in the news for long time. Pakistan, also originally decided to ban the movie, however later gave the film a green signal.

A separately constituted Film Appeals Committee is expected to hear the pleas of distributors in Malaysia. Malaysia had also banned Disney`s `Beauty and the Beast` because of its gay moment, finally allowing it a PG13 certificate. Filmmaker Lena Hendry got prosecuted last year, for holding a private screening of a documentary "No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka."

Based on 16th-century poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi`s poem Padmavat, the movie stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor in the lead. A bloody tale garnished with love sacrifice, lust, and valor.
