Believe it or not, Padmaavat has already completed 7 days at the box office and there’s no stopping this magnum opus of Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

After a tumultuous journey trying to release the film, SLB and the cast won their battle against divisive forces. Padmaavat has managed to collect Rs 155 crores at the box office in just a week of its release.

Made on a budget of over Rs 190 Crores, Padmaavat is surging ahead with bumper openings overseas as well. It already crossed lifetime business of films like Dilwale, Bajirao Mastani, Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai and Bajrangi Bhaijaan in its opening weekend itself. It also became the highest single grosser in North America.

The film is expected to enter the 200 crore club soon, especially since there are no big releases this Friday. This is bound to make Rani Padmavati of the movie very happy. Padmaavat is Deepika Padukone’s 7th film to have entered 100 crore club. No wonder she asks for higher pay than her male co-stars! The film has also catapulted Ranveer Singh to the status of a method actor for his portrayal of Alauddin Khilji in the movie. Shahid Kapoor seems to have impressed his director Sanjay Leela Bhansali irrespective of the fact that this was the first time he ever worked with him.

This has come as overwhelming news for everyone associated with the film. Owing to large scale violent protests, 5 states – Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh – banned the movie.  Despite such setbacks, Padmaavat is inching towards becoming a huge success.

Padmaavat was mired in controversies from the beginning. Fringe groups like Karni Sena had attacked and vandalised theatres claiming that the movie insulted Rani Padmavati. The release date had to be postponed while protests continued in many parts of the country. Even after the release of the film, protests continued with women in Chittor threatening to commit self-immolation. Post the release, there were dissenting voices regarding the depiction of Jauhar in the film, notably from Swara Bhaskar.

But it seems all these controversies generated enough curiosity about the film leading to more people flocking to theatres in the rest of the country.

It remains to be seen if the movie heads towards the 300 crore club in the coming weeks. The film has one more week before big releases come in.
