It`s not every day that Bollywood decides to show love and romance as it is in real life. When you have Anurag Kashyap on board, you know you won`t have quintessential happy endings. Manmarziyaan doesn`t take sides, it shows the way love is and how the young generation has changed their outlook towards relationships.
Like most content-driven films, Manmarziyan does not preach, it merely shows what actually exists. The commitment phobia, the dishonesty, the impulsiveness and the fear that modern-day relationships bring with them are portrayed by three complex characters - Rumi, Vicky, and Robbie. They are totally raw characters, with their own quirks and weaknesses.
Rumi is brash, impulsive and in love with Vicky who is a musician and is not much serious about life, in general. But yes, he loves Rumi and both of them make no mystery of their throbbing passion for each other. Until one day, Rumi is caught red-handed with Vicky and the family forces her to get married. Rumi keeps pestering Vicky, but he doesn`t come to ask for her hand in marriage. Therein lies the problem that most young Indians face - Pyar Toh kar Lia, nibhaoge kaise?
Poor Rumi ultimately married a guy her family chooses. Here you have Abhishek Bachchan rocking it with his performance. Make no mistake, he is not the Prem of Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon. He is the true mirror of people caught up in a love triangle they didn`t sign up for. But Robbie is in no mood to let his lady love go. His is the kind of selfless, romantic love people yearn for secretly. And he is not ready to be a mere witness and let Vicky take away what he had no guts to do when the opportunity came his way.
Abhishek Bachchan is a delight in Manmarziyan. He has given the best comeback he could have and nailed his multi-layered character. Vicky Kaushal plays his alter ego and one can set the actor loving his own character to the core. Taapsee Pannu is loud and unabashed as ever. A typical Punjabi kudi. But it`s writer Kanika Dhillon who is the real hero of Manmarziyan. The audience can see how crisp and Relatable the writing of the film has been. Add to that Amit Trivedi’s music which progresses the story and actually talks about the characters. When was the last time songs were not mere songs in Bollywood?
Manmarziyan doesn`t depict anything new. But it`s approach is marvelous, to say the least. Anurag Kashyap bears his heart out and the people are taking it. The film is very deep on many levels. It is what love is, just an emotion, made torturous by people who, for some reason, like to be complicated.
