Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi has been in the pipeline for long. Based on the life and times of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi (named Manikarnika at birth) who was one of the leading warriors of the 1857 First War of Independence, the epic biographical film is being directed by Krish and produced by ZEE Studios in association with Kamal Jain and Nishant Pitti. The screenplay has been written by KV Vijayendra Prasad who also wrote Bahubali. He had earlier directed two epic historical films in Telugu. Kangana Ranaut might be seen as an actress for the last time in this film. She plans to devote herself completely to filmmaking post Manikarnika.

The shooting of the film began in 2017 at Varanasi which is the birthplace of Rani Laxmibai. Kangana Ranaut had taken a dip in the holy Ganga before commencing the shoot of the film. Her official Instagram handle had posted a portrait picture of her as Rani Laxmibai on the 160th death anniversary of the queen. It was rumoured that the film will be directed by Ketan Mehta. However, it was rubbished by Krish, the director of the film. About the release date of the film, there have been loads of speculations and more number of delays. The shoot has been going on for a year now. Though the makers say they are planning to release Manikarnika this year, it remains to be seen if the film will be able to find a spot in 2018 since all the major weekends have already been taken away by several big banner films. Speculations are also rife that the makers don’t want any other big budget film to “eat into” their business. A possible clash with ‘Zero’ is being avoided and the film, in all likelihood, will be having a solo release. After all, the epic movie has been made on such a large scale.

Manikarnika Story & Trailer:

We have all grown up on the poem of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan in Hindi - “Khub Ladi Mardani, Woh Toh Jhansi Wali Rani Thi.” Rani Laxmi Bai was a cult figure in the 1857 First War of Indian Independence. But, so far, Bollywood did not make a film on one of its foremost women warriors. Yes, we did have a TV show based on her. Kangana Ranaut had expressed her desire to play the epic warrior queen who challenged gender stereotypes and took on swords instead of toys as a child and fought to protect her kingdom Jhansi after her husband died.

The film will chronicle her life story including the details of her childhood and her close aids after becoming a widow. Kangana Ranaut was seen on the sets of the film in Varanasi on a horse as well as wielding a sword. The trailer is yet to hit the screens, but we are, for sure, expecting a grand spectacle, closer to the likes of Padmaavat.

Manikarnika Cast:

Kangana Ranaut had been the first choice of the film from the beginning. For someone who is as fierce and courageous in real life as she is on screen, we think nobody could have done justice to the role as well as she can. She is physically fit enough and trained hard to perform all her stunts without using any body double, something most actors tend to do. Manikarnika is also the launchpad of television actress Ankita Lokhande who plays Rani Laxmibai’s close aide Jhalkaribai. We have Sonu Sood playing the role of Sadashiv and Atul Kulkarni as the famous Tatya Tope. Nihar Pandya plays the role of Nana Sahib and Bengali actor Jisshu Sengupta will essay the role of Gangadhar Rao, Rani Laxmibai’s husband.

Manikarnika Budget, Prediction & Box Office Collection:

Since Bollywood seems to be experimenting a lot with biographies of all kinds, we expect Manikarnika to touch the peak when it releases. A film on Rani Laxmibai was long due and to see Kangana Ranaut play the titular role is nothing short of mesmerizing. The film had been in the pipeline for the longest time before seeing the light of the day. Though an official release date is yet to be announced, the makers and Kangana herself seem to be sure of its release this year itself. Manikarnika budget is ₹200 Crores which adds the film to the list of the most expensive ones to be made. For people who are curious to see a period film made on the warrior queen, Manikarnika is sure to catch their fancy. And we can’t get over the fact that the makers used Rani Laxmibai’s real name Manikarnika. That’s feminism too, people!

Manikarnika Music Videos & Audio Jukebox:

We can’t wait for Shankar - Ehsaan - Loy to weave their magic again. It’s been quite a while since we have heard their music. On top of that, we have the amazing lyricist Prasoon Joshi penning the songs. Well, we do expect some soul-stirring music apart from a few patriotic ones. And yes, since we are talking about Manikarnika (renamed as Laxmibai post marriage), we are hoping for a few melodies centred on and around a woman’s deep emotions. We’d really want to know what was going on in the mind of the woman who had to bear a whole lot to prove her mettle as a woman and to defend her country.

Manikarnika Review & Hit or Flop:

Not many people knew that Rani Laxmibai’s real name was Manikarnika. This is a big step in talking about women empowerment rather than giving it a mere lip service. With Kangana Ranaut, we expect the film will attract a lot of footfall. That apart, the film is also the debut movie of Ankita Lokhande, who was seen with her former beau Sushant Singh Rajput in Ekta Kapoor’s TV soap Pavitra Rishta. She plays Jhalkaribai who was Rani’s close aide and a soldier. She was the one who disguised herself as Rani Laxmibai, enabling the real queen to escape when things went horribly wrong during the war. The role of Gangadhar Rao, King of Jhansi and Manikarnika’s husband, is being essayed by Bengali actor Jisshu Sengupta who has been seen in many Bollywood films. Sonu Sood is another main attraction. With such a stellar star cast, we expect the film would attract people of all age groups and lovers of all genres. The makers are also expecting kids to be interested in watching a film on Rani Laxmibai. We expect it to be a huge, epic family entertainer.
