Allegations of historical inaccuracies in the portrayal of Peshwa Bajirao 1, Kashibai and Mastani have surfaced after their descendants filed charges against the film and the maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. From the costumes used in the song “Pinga” to Kashibai’s portrayal and the dialogues, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani has stirred controversies, primarily coming in from descendants of the three historical figures – Peshwa Bajirao 1, Kashibai, and Mastani. They alleged that the song Pinga has improper costumes. Plus, the two wives of Bajirao never met except once at a formal gathering, let alone dance together. Kashibai’s dance was also questioned since the descendants say that she suffered from an arthritis-like ailment all her life which confined her to bed for most of her life.
She also suffered from asthma; hence her dance was absolutely out of question. The song has also been deemed offensive to the Marathi culture on account of the costumes the actresses wore which were more in tune with lavani than royalty. The 2-minute love scene between Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra has also been questioned apart from the dialogue, “Bajirao ne Mastani se Mohabbat ki hai, Aiashi nahi” which, the descendants claim is downright vulgar.
