“Women-oriented, where females put fantasy over life”!? Muslim women!!? Hush! Enough already! How disrespectful, obviously it got banned by the censor board!

Having said that, the above mentioned are the grounds given by the board for banning the movie! Shook? Wait till you read more!

A burkha-clad college student who is into music and wants the freedom to live her own life, a beautician who wants to escape the claustrophobic small patriarchal town she lives in, a housewife with three kids who desires  the alternate life of a saleswoman and a 55-year old widow who finds sexual resurgence with a swimming coach.

After a long battle of six months the makers of Lipstick under my Burkha won, where the CBFC agreed to release the movie with voluntary cuts and without a rating. The movie encapsulates what women feel but are afraid to say out loud. It is one of the boldest attempts in times where filmmakers are trying to generalize sisterhood and make freedom of expression for women mainstream with movies like Parched, Unfreedom and Sonata.

Quick question: count the number of movies on brotherhood, male centric eroticism, men breaking religious boundaries and other stereotypes. And now do the same but replace male leads with female leads, so balanced no?

How can we even talk about female erotic desires and basic rights in one the most populated countries of the world?!

The spirit of the movie is contagious and the makers and cast have taken unique steps to make sure the ‘lipstick revolution’ gets the spotlight! With actors like Ratna Pathak and Konkana Sen Sharma who have been leaders of women-centric roles, it makes it an impossible miss!

Don’t you think it’s time that we start treating women and their needs with some normalcy?  Why do women have to fight and create a revolution to get the same rights as men?! Or should we just keep addressing our country and goddesses as females and sing “maa tujhe salam” with a hand across our heart?

Phew! It’s not all serious talk and no fun! We have a treat for you! Here’s a link to some ‘Gandi Kahaniyas’ shared by the cast and crew of the movie! You’re welcome.
