Margarita With a Straw is more than just a story about a girl suffering from cerebral palsy; the film aptly focuses how cruelly the differently-abled are treated in our country. Kalki Koechlin has breathed life into her character as Laila, a young, spirited girl who dares to take control of her life in spite of heartbreak and the pathetic treatment meted out to her by a society which doesn’t look beyond her physical deformities.

Revathy comes across as a perfect mother to Laila who begins to discover her sexuality once she moves to New York on a scholarship for creative writing. Though the city makes Laila feel more comfortable since it accepts her with her physical deformities, Laila has to come to terms with her mother who fails to accept her for who she is. Kalki Koechlin’s best performance till date, Margarita With a Straw does lack a few doses of reality but is high on portraying the complexities of an adolescent girl who does not let her deformities take over.

Margarita With a Straw has many heart-warming scenes and moments which will tug at your deepest emotional chords. The only defect is too much emphasis on making the audience cry rather than make them see Laila as just another ‘normal’ human being.
