Drishyam is the Kahaani Thriller you have been Seeking

Suspense thrillers have been a rare occurrence in Bollywood. The last we could think of was Vidya Balan’s Kahaani in 2012 with edge-of-the-seat, gripping story and cinematic pace. Drishyam provides you with the same. And the cast coupled with a strong script makes it easier.

Nishikant Kamat as the director has tried to add the pace that is so much needed in the film. The original Malayalam film starring Mohanlal was a common man’s struggle to deal with the unsettling circumstances that have befallen his family. However, comparing Ajay Devgn as Vijay with Mohanlal would be unfair. Keeping in mind the pan-Indian audiences’ appeal and taste, the movie puts together songs depicting a happy family, a common man who would go to any extent to protect his family and the corrupt police force who shelters perpetrators since they are high and mighty.

The film, just like Kahaani, keeps you glued to your seat and you are left to wonder what really happened. Add to that the fact that the movie is watchable with your entire family. Drishyam works wonders in terms of the depth both Devgn and Tabu have put in it. Unfortunately, Shriya Saran and Rajat Kapoor had nothing much to put into their roles and that comes off as a bit of a surprise. We’d strongly recommend not comparing it with the Malayalam version.

It’s the thrilling yet relatable aspect of the film that makes it work really well with a pan-Indian audience. You get a feeling of the “Catch Me if You Can” syndrome all through the film. And the climax, like the one in Kahaani, leaves you shocked and stunned! Every character has a nuanced portrayal and it leaves no stone unturned to make sure they are given their due.
