Bollywood movies, right from the era of Raj Kapoor, have received worldwide attention. The popularity of Bollywood movies in the overseas market over the years have been mainly because of the major star attractions in different countries like Raj Kapoor in Russia, Shah Rukh Khan in Germany and the Middle East, Aamir Khan in China, Hrithik Roshan in the U.S.A, Priyanka Chopra in U.S.A and many more. However, in the recent few years, we have seen that apart from star pull, overseas audiences are also being attracted with a new creative storyline that Bollywood movies are producing along with the brilliant display of acting by actors, who are popularly unknown in a specific overseas territory. ( e.g Irrfan Khan, Hindi Medium, China).

This has been a reason why we see that these days many Bollywood movies with a good concept and refreshing stories are doing wonders in the overseas market, even though they are doing an average business at Box Office in India ( e.g Secret Superstar, 65 Crores in India, Over 900 Crores Worldwide).  One reason is maybe Indian audience is still attracted towards entertaining masala flicks whereas the new generation directors of Bollywood are trying to experiment and venture in new spheres and dimensions of Cinema. ( Shoojit Sircar, October).

Let us have a look at some of the Bollywood movies which did wonders at Overseas Box Office but did average business in India.

Secret Superstar(65 Crores in India, over 900 Crores Worldwide) -

Even Though, 9 Bollywood movies made into the 100 Crore club last year, 2017 was majorly a dry year for Bollywood. Out of 263 movies which released last year, only 19 Films went to enter the 50 Crore club and more than 70 films earned around the range of  1 Crore only. Moreover, every big Bollywood actor gave flop movies last year, i.e. Shah Rukh Khan in Jab Harry Met Sejal, Ranbir Kapoor in Jagga Jasoos, Salman Khan in Tubelight, Tiger Shroff in Munna Michael, Ajay Devgn in Baadshaho and many more. However, among all the failures of movies, the Aamir Khan and Zaira Wasim starrer Secret Superstar went out to be a sleeper hit at Indian Box office. The story of an aspiring singer, with many hurdles in her life, was quite refreshing and Secret Superstar turned out to be a critical hit. It collected 65 Crores at Indian Box Office. However, because of the immense popularity of Aamir Khan in China, Secret Superstar did wonders there. In China alone, the movie collected nearly 800 Crores, even though Aamir Khan was just playing an extended cameo role in the movie. The Overseas collection of Secret Superstar went over 900 Crores, thus making it a huge blockbuster.

Dangal (387 Crores in India over 1600 Crores Worldwide) -

We all know that Dangal shattered all the records at Indian Box Office. The Aamir Khan, Fatima Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra starrer became the highest grossing Bollywood movie, collecting 387 crores at Indian Box Office. Till today, no other Bollywood movie has still gone close to it. Before releasing in China, Dangal did fairly well overseas, collecting over 300 Crores. This was mainly because of the powerful storyline and sheer dedication of Aamir Khan to get into the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat. However, when released in China, Dangal just broke all the records of the highest grossing Bollywood movie Worldwide. In China itself, the movie grossed over 1400 Crores and thus, the total Box office Collection of Dangal was 2,122 Crores.

Hindi Medium (60 Crores in India, 270 Crores Worldwide) -

The opening of China market for Bollywood movies has done wonders for this Industry. The Indian movies, apart from Bahubali - The Conclusion(which is doing not up to the mark as per China Box Office Collection) which have so far released in China have done exceptionally well. In fact, nearly one-third of Worldwide Box office Collection of Bollywood movies which was released in China, have come from China. Same as in the case of one of the rare superhit movie of 2017, Hindi Medium starring Irrfan Khan. The movie made on a budget of 35 Crores, collected 60 Crores in India but did phenomenally at China Box Office, collecting over 250 Crores. The total overseas collection of Hindi Medium was 270 Crores, thereby making the total worldwide Box Office collection of over 330 Crores.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan, (325 Crores in India, Over 600 Crores Worldwide) -

Bajrangi Bhaijaan recently released in China and as usual did exceptionally well there. The movie collected nearly 300 Crores in China. However, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, when originally released worldwide in the year 2015, because of its beautiful and mesmerizing story did well not only at Indian Box Office but also overseas. The movie collected 325 Crores at Indian Box Office and collected over 300 Crores worldwide, before releasing in China market.

Dilwale, (150 Crores in India, over 250 Crores Worldwide) -

No…. Dilwale has not released in China. Dilwale was one of the most anticipating movies of 2015 because of the reunion of the most favorite Bollywood Jodi of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol after 5 years. However, the movie did not live up to the mark at Indian Box Office because of weak direction and storyline and also because of clashing with one of the biggest hits of that year Bajirao Mastani. However, because of the presence of Shah Rukh Khan, who is the most popular Indian celebrity worldwide, the movie did well at worldwide Box Office collecting over 250 Crores.

My Name is Khan, (75 Crores in India, Over 130 Crores Worldwide) -

`My Name is Khan` had the costliest ticket pricing in India during the time of its release. In fact, due to this reason, only the movie could not sustain more than 2 weeks in most parts of India. This resulted in average collections of  75 Crores. But again due to the star power of Shah Rukh Khan at overseas market, the movie did exceptionally well outside India and collected over 130 Crores. In fact, it was the first Shah Rukh Khan movie which grossed over 200 Crores at Worldwide Box Office Collection.

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, (45 Crores in India, over 70 Crores Worldwide) -

Karan Johar during the mid-2000’s directed Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna with the storyline of extramarital affair and infidelity, the concepts which were not accepted by the majority of Indian masses during that time because of their orthodox outlook. Eventually, the movie had a flop verdict in India. However, because of a refreshing story and again the presence of Shah Rukh Khan, the movie was the biggest overseas blockbuster for some time and also received high international critical acclamation. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna made over 70 Crores in the overseas market.
