Did the amazing transformation of Ranbir Kapoor for his upcoming biopic Sanjuleave you amazed? The Bollywood heartthrob had to put on weight and gain muscles to play the original rock star of the industry. His efforts earned him huge accolades from people, including Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor, who took him for real Sanjay Dutt.

The length to which the method actor went shows the passion and dedication to his craft. There are some other actors who radically transformed their physique for the characters they were essaying on screen. Here’s the list:

Ranveer Singh

To portray the character of savage invader Allauddin Khilji in ‘Padmaavat, Ranveer Singh bulked up his body and worked on the facial expressions that earned him accolades from critics and viewers and is considered as one of his best performances so far. His physical transformation in the 2016 movie ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and 2013 movie ‘Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram – Leela’ also proved to be turning points during that phase of his career. His latest avatar in Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Gully Boy’ is of a rapper and for the role, he has shed a lot of weight and muscle.

Aamir Khan

The ‘Dangal actor played the role of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, the father, and trainer of Phogat sisters. For playing the older Phogat, Aamir had to pile on 30 kilos of flab and he lost around 25 kilos to play the younger version of the wrestler. In 2008, he amazed everyone with his eight-pack abs body in ‘Ghajini’ after that he worked on himself to look like an engineering student in ‘3 Idiots’. The Mr. Perfectionist of Bollywood’s was seen with completely different body types, though they’re ripped and muscular, for his next movies ‘Talaash’, ‘Dhoom 3 and ‘PK.

Hrithik Roshan

Did you know Hrithik Roshan had to lose about 10 kilos of muscle to get into the skin of the intellectually-challenged character in 2003 movie ‘Koi … Mil Gaya’. After that, he sported a ripped body for his characters in ‘Lakshya’, ‘Krrish’, ‘Dhoom 2’, and ‘Kites’. His Greek God physique underwent a radical transformation for 2010 movie ‘Guzaarish in which he put on a lot of flab and added six inches to his waist to play the role of a paraplegic. After two years of training, he showed his best form in ‘Krrish 3. He’s reduced some muscles for his upcoming movie ‘Super 30 where he’s playing mathematics wizard, Anand Kumar.

Bhumi Pednekar

While several female actors go fab from flab to bag their dream roles, the ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha is probably the only one to go reverse and gained 30 kilos for a role of a middle-class wife in the movie. She took about three years to shed the extra weight and be a lead actor in acclaimed movies such as ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan and ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha.

Randeep Hooda

The ‘Sarbjit’ actor lost 18 kilos in 28 days to play the role of Sarbjit Singh, who was imprisoned and tortured for 13 years in Pakistan under the charges of terrorism and espionage. After playing the part of the emaciated and languishing prisoner, he had to immediately gain muscle for ‘Do Lafzon Ki Kahani’ and ‘Sultan’, where he played the characters of mixed martial arts fighters.

Farhan Akhtar

The ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ actor went extraordinary length to resemble ‘The Flying Sikh’ Milkha Singh in the biopic. He underwent a 13-month long program in which he exercised for six hours a day and strengthened his core. To play the role of the legendary sprinter, he underwent grueling training sessions and all his efforts paid off.

Shah Rukh Khan

At 42, Shahrukh Khan delighted his fans by sporting six-pack abs in the 2007 movie ‘Om Shanti Om. After nine years, he leveled up his game by unveiling eight-pack abs and fabulously fit body in ‘Happy New Year’, where he portrays the role of a street fighter and has a fight scene of five minutes.

Shahid Kapoor

We have seen him recently as Maharaja Ratan Singh in 2018 magnum opus ‘Padmaavat, where he graced a lean look befitting his character of a courageous, gentle and dignified Rajput king. In 2016 movie ‘Udta Punjab’, he essayed the role of a cocaine-addicted rockstar with a ripped but skinny physique. The role of a hustler in 2009 movie ‘Kaminey’ required him to tone up his body into a raw figure.

Rajkummar Rao

With back-to-back superhit movies in his kitty and all the critical acclaim, the ‘Trapped actor is a powerhouse performer in the industry. His physical transformation is no less astounding as for the movie, where he played the role of a man trapped in a building for several days, he sported an emaciated look, reducing lots of kilos. After that, he had to return to his normal shape for his next movie characters. Then he had to put on a lot of weight to play Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in a web series titled ‘Bose: Dead Or Alive’.


The ‘Bahubali actor devoted an entire year to put on all that double extra large muscles so that he can play the protagonist character convincingly. After the completion of the first installment, he had to retain the physique for the shoot of the second part. He reprised the character effortlessly in ‘Bahubali 2’ and the rest is history. His dedication and sacrifice for five years created milestones in the Indian cinema industry.

Vidya Balan

To play the role of late South Indian actress Silk Smitha in 2010 movie ‘The Dirty Picture’, the actor put on 12 kilos for the movie. After wrapping up the movie, she had to struggle with the weight loss procedure and it took her longer than usual to finally return to her previous avatar.

Emraan Hashmi

After sporting eight-pack abs for ‘Murder 2’ that earned him rave reviews for his acting and style statement, the actor looked almost unrecognizable with a protruding belly, bucked, yellowed and paan-stained teeth and sun-tanned arms in the 2012 movie ‘Shanghai’. He gained almost 12 kilos to play the character of Jogi, an opportunist swindler always in search to make a quick buck.
