If you have seen the trailer of Blackmail, you must be walking around a curious man! The movie starring Irrfan Khan, Arunoday Singh, Kirti Kulhari and Divya Dutta in pivotal roles is set to hit the theatres on 6th April 2018. Director Abhinay Deo is known to throw in surprises in his movies, right since Delhi Belly. Post that, some of his movies have tanked at the box office but he has always scored with casting. Urmila Matondkar and Anuja Sathe will also be making guest appearances here. It is a small film riding on the star power of Irrfan Khan who has been making some noticeable splashes with movies such as Hindi Medium and Qarib Qarib Singlle.

The total budget for the film is 14 crores. Let’s break the film’s budget down.

Actors

Even if a small budget movie, the cast includes several known actors. But, the short shooting schedule has helped the producers negotiate reasonable fees with them. From the looks of it, this looks like a holiday film for Irrfan Khan. He takes the lion’s share home with 3.5 Crores. Arunoday Singh, Kirti Kulhari, and Divya Dutta have taken around 50 Lakhs each.  The total for the cast would be nearly 7 Crores.

Pre-Production

Small movies have a very little budget for reconnaissance. The writing, research, and planning would be billed at 25 Lakhs.

Production

The films technical aspects, helmed by the seasoned Deo, look charming. The production includes Cinematography, Art Direction, Music, Locations, Sets, Costumes, Assistants, Crew, Food, Stay, Insurance etc. Fresh Box Office team estimates that it is nearly 4 crores.

With a smart producer like Bhushan Kumar, the director Abhinay Deo would take home not more than 1 Crore. This adds up to a total of 5 Crores.

Post-Production

While the film’s editing is done by Huzefa Lokhandwala who also edited Delhi Belly, there is a very little cost (as low as 10 Lakhs) of Digital Intermediate, given its scope in the film. The total Post-production estimate is roughly 25 Lakhs.

Publicity and Advertising

The trailer released late, and I would say a calculative step because the producers have planned in so with the Publicity and advertising budget. As usual, at least 10 percent of the movie is spent on advertising. The makers know, as a pattern, that an Irrfan Khan film takes flight with word-of-mouth. Hence, the budget for this section is 1.5 Crores only.

T-Series and Irrfan have had a great previous collaboration. When the production house delivered duds in 2017 like Baadshaho, Chef, and Raabta with big star casts, they reaped delightful figures with Hindi Medium.

Box-Office Predictions

Irrfan Khan’s movies like Piku and Hindi Medium have been blockbusters. At the same time, Qarib Qarib Singlle fared averagely. Largely, the film’s fate depends on how relatable the Junta finds the movie. From the looks of things, it should make roughly 15 crores at the box office. It will make another 8 Crores through Music and Satellite Rights.
