Bollywood has always been ruled by Khans or, as of now, the star kids. And we have heard enough of gender inequality that prevails in the industry. Yet, in the year 2017, a lot of things did change. While the content was hailed as the sole hallmark of a good film, actors who were earlier classified as “method actors” or Indie actors, have now taken the reign. Gone are the days when only Khans or Kumars would rule! It’s the time of the actors with prowess than looks to shine through.

Change the Game:

That is not to say that Khans have no power anymore. A Shah Rukh Khan has still sought after. And Akshay Kumar continues to reign supreme even now, though he has changed his image and the kind of films he does. But things have changed. For female actors, apart from women-oriented films working well at the box office, substantial roles with female teams and production houses spearheaded by women are the norm. While Vidya Balan still remains dominant, late Sridevi made her mark as an older actress and Rani Mukerji proves time and again how well she can handle an entire film on her own. We take a look at the best performances of 2017 in Bollywood:

1.Rajkummar Rao:

Be it Newton or the recently released Omerta, the actors changed the stereotype of a top-rated actor in Bollywood. He has indeed come a long way from Ragini MMS. With none of the conventional looks or dancing abilities, Rajkumar Rao made his mark in the industry, more so in the year 2017. From Newton to Bareilly ki Barfi and Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana to a power-packed role in Trapped and a 300-year-old man in Raabta, he did it all. That apart, his web series Bose: Dead/Alive was also widely appreciated. There’s no stopping him now!

2.Vidya Balan:

The woman who was labeled the harbinger of bad luck in the South gave 64 auditions for the role of Lolita in ‘Parineeta’. In spite of initial hiccups, Vidya was one of the first actresses to embrace herself in her own skin. She broke the archetypal image of a glamorous actress and took all the films she starred in on her own shoulders. Even in films like Begum Jaan which didn’t work well at the BO, she made people appreciate her work. Tumhari Sulu was far more relatable to all sections of women and she won her 6th Filmfare Best Actress Award for it.

3.Sridevi:

The pan India superstar had made a successful second inning in Bollywood, rare for an actress her age before her life was cut short by a tragic accident. Long before Madhuri Dixit came in the picture, Sridevi mesmerized everyone solely by her talent. From being a child star to a successful adult star and starring in the most powerful and socially relevant films of recent times, there’s nothing that she didn’t do. No other male actor could attain that level of pan-India superstardom. From Mr. India to Chaalbaaz to English Vinglish and Mom, Sridevi reigned supreme above all. Too bad, we won’t be able to see what more she would have done next!

4.Irrfan Khan:

The actor had been in the industry for close to two decades before he turned into a superstar. By far, one of the best actors of Bollywood, Irfan grew rapidly and starred in amazing movies – from The Lunchbox to Piku and Qarib Qarib Singlle, he has done it all. He, too, proved that one need not be conventionally good looking or a dancer or sport six-pack abs to act. Not just Bollywood, he proved his merit in Hollywood as well. In an interview before the release of Jurassic World, he recalled how he could not watch the 1993 Jurassic Park because of lack of money! More than 20 years later, he starred in one! His latest release Blackmail was also well-received. Here’s praying for a speedy recovery to this phenomenal actor.

5.Akshay Kumar:

From being Khiladi Kumar to starring and producing some impactful social films like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and the recently-released Pad Man, he has changed his strategy and worked according to the times. Bringing along a new form of patriotism, he has done what most actors of his time have not been able to do with such success. He won the National Award for Airlift. Which other actor made such a smooth transition from action to comedy and then to social films?

6.Alia Bhatt:

When she entered the industry, she was made fun of and nobody thought she’d be more than a dumb damsel in distress. But the way she silenced her critics with her work was exemplary, to say the least. She proved the adage right, “Let your work do the talking” and “Success is the best revenge.” From Highway, Udta Punjab to Badrinath Ki Dulhania to her soon-to-be-released Raazi, she has been performing exceptionally well and is already a superstar. More power to her!

7.Swara Bhaskar:

Seen in impactful supporting roles, Swara Bhasker made it known that talent beats everything else every time. She was phenomenal in Raanjhnaa as well as Tanu Weds Manu Returns and its prequel. Her performance as a lead actress in Anaarkali of Aarah made critics, as well as the audience, see there was more to her. Unabashed, unapologetic and super cool, Swara Bhasker is all set to show her more of her talent in her next release “Veere di Wedding.” The feisty actress is here to stay!

8.Prabhas:

He isn’t exactly a Bollywood actor, but he might be one soon! Post the super success of the Bahubali franchise, Prabhas is witnessing a beeline of top filmmakers eager to launch him in Bollywood. Whether this is just a rumor is to be seen. However, his fan following in other parts of India, apart from the South, is something to be reckoned with. And if he really makes a debut in Bollywood, one can expect queues at the ticket counters!
