The film is a biopic on the life of Dashrath Majhi who takes it upon himself to carve a path amidst the mountains which block the path of his village from the main city. His wife dies because of lack of timely medical attention and the man toils for 22 years to carve a path out of chisel.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui is the heart and soul of this film and sets out to give the performance of a lifetime. From exhibiting enormous determination to strong willpower in the face of all resistance, he puts forth all the energy that he has into this role. Radhika Apte acts as the perfect contender as she painfully portrays the role of his ailing wife. Manjhi also portrays the political climate and brings to the fore the issue of untouchability, casteism and more.
The conviction that a man can single-handedly change the whole scenario and make modern amenities come to his village after a personal tragedy reflects in the way the film works as well. Radhika Apte does not relegate to the background as usually happens with such films. She is ever present and gives a fine performance on screen.
