Race, with its infinite plot twists and turns, became an instant box-office hit which is why the makers decided to make it a franchise with ‘Race 2’ in 2013. Now, the third installment of the ‘Race’ franchise is also underway that released yesterday. The Remo D`Souza directed movie casts Bollywood’s top-notch biggest actors including Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Bobby Deol, Daisy Shah, Saqib Saleem and Freddy Daruwala in the second sequel.

What was ‘Race’ was all about?

The movie was all about Ranvir and Rajiv Singh, played by Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna, brothers who’ve inherited a farm in Durban. Ranvir, being the older one, is focused on saving the business from bankruptcy and is an avid derby enthusiast, whereas Rajiv is an aimless, alcoholic spoilt-rich-brat. Ranvir then decides to sacrifice his love Sonia (played by Bipasha Basu) and hook her up with his brother, hoping marriage to act as the cure to his Chhota Bhai and help him get over his drinking habits. But the sad part is that never happens and in a moment of weakness, Ranvir and Sonia slip between the sheets, which starts a series of betrayals, double-crosses and murders.

The movie does not reveal all its cards at once, like any other thriller film. The layers of the movie come off one by one adding more thrill to it. And the best part is, every time you think that you have figured it out, another shocker hits you out of the blue. The prime reason why the movie keeps you engrossed is that it is fast-paced and slick, also it doesn’t give you the time to even catch its flaws.

Saif Ali Khan stands out as the one with the ‘less is more’ type of dialogues, where he doesn’t speak much but when he does he definitely packs a punch! On the other hand, actor Akshaye Khanna delivers his part of being an amateur perfectly. Of the ladies, only Bipasha Basu was on point with her flawless performance.

The movie was directed by Abbas-Mustan and produced by Ramesh S. Taurani and Kumar S. Taurani. The story of the movie is written by Jitendra Parmar and Anurag Prapanna, and the movie stars Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy. The movie had a budget of 46 crores INR and its box-office collection was 106 crores. It was released in 2008.

The movie is all about the handsome heroes surrounded by fast luxurious cars and sexy women, as the rich get richer by swindling casinos, cheating at high-value card games, and stealing prized artifacts from museums. The movie never deviated too far from the blueprint of the 2008 film, of which this is the first sequel. Race 2 introduces two charming conmen against each other in a spicy canvas of friendship, double-crossings, and revenge. Saif Ali Khan returns as Ranvir Singh, a loaded tycoon with an agenda and Anil Kapoor as RD, the former cop, and ravenous fruit-eater, as they were seen in the first part of the franchise. But Sameera Reddy was replaced by Amisha Patel, his new bimbo assistant, whose very name ‘Cherry’ lends itself to a slew of double meaning jokes. John Abraham, meanwhile, is a criminal kingpin, Armaan Malik, who forever exploits opportunities to expand his empire.

Race 2 is the cinematic and glamorous equivalent of a trashy, tawdry and tacky novel which never holds together as a sensible piece of work, but was quite enjoyable as an insensible piece of work. The makers cleverly create a cocktail of glamorous stars, exotic foreign locations, slick action scenes, and an outrageous plot to add a little ‘masala’ to the average boring movie.

The movie had a budget of 84 crores INR and its box-office collection was 162 crore. It was released in 2013.

Although the critics reviewed it as a plotless and tedious movie, the Salman fans are going gaga over it.
