Bollywood is not always about depicting happy and successful love stories. Real lives are always not perfect. We might be leaving one, but it’s not how things work. One wrong step and things might come crumbling down! Shit is real and it does happen! And some filmmakers have the guts to show you what it is to be in that situation. It’s not always a fairytale! We bring you 7 Bollywood films which will leave you disturbed and have been loathed for the gory portrayal of reality. Some of them are so disturbing it will shake you up.

 UGLY (2013)

Anurag Kashyap is a master filmmaker and never shies away from creating something which will stir you up from inside. One such film of his is, “Ugly”. It is a film that engages, excites and disturbs its viewers in many ways! The plot revolves around a mysterious disappearance of a child but as the movie progresses; it changes its course from the mystery and shows what the mystery does to the character. (Twisted much?) All the characters have a tint of grey and black. The thriller show the real faces of human in their most vulnerable state.

GULAAL (2009)

This film has also been directed by Anurag Kashyap. It is a tale of betrayal, desire, power, lust and corruption. The film revolves around the topic of ragging and student university politics. It is a well constructed dram a with well developed characters that drive the narrative which unfolds the quintessential Kashyap. The climax will leave you deeply disturbed. True to its name, the film refers to the bloodbath that happens throughout the movie.

It is a psychological thriller directed by Tanuja Chandra and stars Akshay Kumar, Preity Zinta and Ashutosh Rana in the lead role. It is based on the American movie The Silence of The Lambs. Ashutosh’s stellar performance focuses on the ritual of child sacrifices for religious appeasement. The film takes off the veil of the hypocrisy in the society we live in.

SATYA (1998)

Explicit language, gory bloodbaths and dark characters is the base of the film. The story revolves around a normal immigrant in Mumbai who gets sucked into the big bad world of the underworld and how ruthless the city of Mumbai gets for him. The film is directed by Ram Gopal Verma who is known for his grotesque films but delivers an uncompromising and honest masterpiece with this movie. It sure will shake you up!

The film is one of the most disturbing movie which deals with the concept of female foeticide and the plight of women in India. The story talks about a wealthy man who buys women for him and his sons for their sexual satisfaction. It depicts a future dystopia in an Indian village populated mostly by males due to female infanticide over the years. Film is directed by Manish Jha. It shows the impact of the need of gender balance in the society.

NH 10 (2015)

In recent times, this is one of the most disturbing cinematic experiences I have had. It tells the story of a young couple whose road trip goes awry after an encounter with a group of violent criminals. It is loosely based on 2007 Manoj-Babli honour killing case. It talks and shows the gory details of how honour killing functions. The name of the film refers to the National Highway 10 which connects Delhi to Punjab. In the film the goons kill Anushka’s husband and then she returns to avenge his death. The scenes are very well thought but would leave you with a dark and disturbed mind.

SHAITAN (2011)

This film is inspired from Anurag Kashyap’s directorial debut “Paanch”. As the name suggests, it talks about the inherent shaitan inside each one of us. The film revolves around a group of young kids who plan to abduct the richest kid among them to make easy money. But the plan backfires and ends in mindless violence and sways back and forth between a psychological gory and a gory film. It is very honest and on the face.

With the release of Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Monsoon Shootout, another gory thriller film produced by Anurag Kashyap, we thought it was necessary for everyone to watch these films as well. Life is not a dharma production, so we get to you the raw and mind boggling films which will screw your brain!
