Some movies come and go and some stay to impact your decisions and change your perception of life. Let’s take a look at the top five directorial debuts and a one movie old Umesh Shukla, in his second venture that can challenge your perception of life.
Neeraj Ghaywan’s debut shows the constant cycle of life and death and the process of moving on from it in a new light.Unlike our typical ‘desi’ movies death is not over-played and is rather understated which has a much greater impact. Richa Chadda, Vicky Kaushal and Shweta Tripathy are a lethal combination and prove so with their subtle yet powerfulperformances. The movie alters our basic understanding and shows a different life where anticipated futures are tragically ruined. And somehow Varun Grover’s script succeeds in giving you the courage to face the true adversity called life!
Another direction debut by Vikram Motwane, Udaan is one of the best coming-of-age movies in recent times. The naked portrayal of a strained father-son relationship has been beautifully represented by Rajat Barmecha and Ronit Kapoor(who knew ‘kyuki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi’s’ Mihir could blow our minds?). Are you a teenager who is going through a crisis of discovering yourself or maybe you just want to think of your teenage days and reminiscence, It shows the true mental turmoil a teenager goes through and emerges successful, it gives you a sense of hope for the better. A must watch!

Wish to see the best magic show or the most creative stories? Peep into the mind of a child! Mr. Perfectionist made a ‘perfect’ debut with one of the best child artist in recent times, Darsheel Safary. The movie captures the innocent and pure essence of a specially abled child and his fight against the so-called normalcy! It makes us believe that every child is special and somehow their troubles don’t seem so petty anymore! You didn’t cry during the “Meri maa” song? Oh ya sure!
A Ritesh Batra direction, this movie is a masterpiece in itself. The way the director makes you a part of Ila and Aunty’s conversation is admirable. Nimrat Kaur and Irrfan Khan warm your heart with their delicate love and romance without even sharing the frame! It is beautiful how the different layers of each character are carefully pulled apart which makes it so much more relatable. The movie changes our much stereotyped perception of love and marriage.
This movie is a two in one as it entertains and awakens the inner ‘God’ in us. A must watch directed by Umesh Shukla that is superbly supported by Paresh Rawal’s rock solid performance and Akshay Kumar’s ‘oh so hot’ suave ‘Kanhaiya” avatar. The movie aptly encapsulates the barbaric ways in which religion is used as a backdrop for crime dirty politics and corruption, while reminding us the true values and morals of our Vedas (which basically just guides us to be more humane and compassionate even while following the right path). It empowers us to look up to our God and see his true compassionate visage instead of the one we paint! Right?
