Shyam Benegal or Shyam Babu is one of the most influential directors since Satyajit Ray. He created a new genre if cinema, called the “middle cinema” which now is called as “Alternate Cinema” in India. Padma Shri and Padma Bhusan Shyam Benegal was born in Tirumalagiri in Telangana and turned 82 today! He is married to Nira Benegal and has a daughter, Pia, who is a costume designer. Mandi (1983)

This film had Shaban Azmi, Smita Patil and Neena Gupta in the lead roles. It narrates the story of a brothel, situated in the heart of a city, an area that some politicians want for prime locality. Shabana Azmi portrayed the role of Rukmini Bai, the Madame of the brothel. A gorgeous group of female actors who play a bunch of carefree whores who actually enjoy what they do. The direction couldn’t have been any better than this.

Nishant (1975)

Directed by Shyam Babu, this film is based on the actual screenplay by Vijay Tendulkar. With an ensemble of parallel cinema actors like Girish Karnad, Amrish Puri, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil and Naseeruddin Shah this film focuses n the power of rural elite and the sexual exploitation of women. It won a National Award in 1977.

Kalyug (1981)

This is a crime drama film based on the modern day version of Mahabharat depicted as an exemplary conflict between rival houses. The film starred, Shashi Kapoor, Rekha, Raj Babbar and Supriya Pathak in the lead roles. The film is about two warring families caught in corporate war and the elaborate family tree graph makes it difficult to keep track of who’s who. This film was the 2nd collaboration of Shyam Benegal and Shashi Kapoor. Shashi ji produced this film.

Ankur (1974)

Ankur was Shyam Benegal’s first feature film and the debut film of Ananth Nag and Shabana Azmi. This film is based on a true story that occurred in Hyderabad. It depicted feudal tyranny and sexual oppression. The film’s neo-realism was widely accepted. It won 3 National Awards.

Zubeidaa (2001)

The film is based on the life of the ill-fated actress Zubeida Begum, who married Hanwant Singh of Jodhpur. The film stars, Karishma Kapoor, Rekha, Manoj Bajpayee, Amrish Puri and Farida Jalal in the lead roles. It won the best feature film award in National Film Awards. The music of the film has been given by maestro A. R. Rahman. It revolves around Zubeidaa and her turbulent relationship with her husband, and her inner demons leading her to a decision which has fatal consequences.
