Bollywood actresses have been known for their beauty. Much before ageism came into the picture and people resorted to cosmetic surgery, Bollywood’s yesteryear actresses mesmerized everyone with their beauty and grace. Braving the male-dominated film industry, these actresses ruled people’s hearts and are etched in their memories to this day. We take a look at 10 such Yesteryear Bollywood beauties.

Madhubala-

Her beauty was so ethereal that Hollywood had offers on her plate. However, Madhubala could not have her dream debut overseas. Yet, in spite of being seen in just one song in colour, Madhubala wins over every other actress so far in Bollywood hands down! Her beauty kept on increasing as she grew up and she remains alive in people’s heart more than 50 years after her death.

Nargis–

One look at this diva and her beauty and you will know why Raj Kapoor was smitten by her. Though she worked in a number of superhit movies, it was Mother India which shot her to international fame when it was nominated in the Best Foreign Film category. Nargis could work magic in all her avatars and that made her special among her peers.

Dimple Kapadia–

She was a young girl of 16 when she made her Bollywood debut opposite Rishi Kapoor in the film Bobby. The role was controversial since it features her in crop-cut blouses, bikinis and more, making everyone sit up and take notice. Kapadia won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role and since then, has been enthralling people with her beauty.

Mumtaz–

The sultry actress was known for her dance moves and scintillating grace. Her pairing with her favourite Rajesh Khanna was a hit and they both worked in many movies together. Though she started with small-budget films, her success catapulted her to stardom later on. And who can forget her unique sari drapes?

Zeenat Aman–

The former Miss Asia Pacific revolutionized the way Bollywood mainstream actresses dressed and were perceived on screen. Her bold roles and dressing sense made her controversial, but also one of the most sought-after actresses of her time. While actresses of her time played goody, subservient roles, she chose to play women with grey shades.

Rekha–

Nobody can beat the charm and the mysticism of Rekha. To this day she remains an elegant persona and relevant to people. Though her initial days were marred with hiccups, she soon transformed herself and rose to fame with some blockbuster films. Playing varied roles, Rekha is still seen in films, experimenting and reprising herself whenever necessary.

Smita Patil–

The dusky diva worked in some of the greatest movies of her time. She didn’t just play femme fatale roles on screen but was also a feminist in real life who believed in living life on her own terms. Her premature death during childbirth cast a gloom over the entire film fraternity.

Saira Banu–

The thin-framed actress was known for her radiant beauty. She made her debut at the age of 17 opposite Shammi Kapoor and went on to be a part of iconic movies all through the 60s. Her role in Manoj Kumar’s Purab Aur Paschim as a foreigner girl was something, many agreed, only she could pull off.

Hema Malini–

The dream girl of many hearts, the South Indian beauty soon catapulted to fame. Her performance in films like Mehboob and more showed varied sides of her onscreen persona. No wonder Dharmendra went crazy about her!

Sharmila Tagore –

She left her school education midway to be a part of the Hindi film fraternity. Her Bengali beauty mesmerized audiences. But, it was her role and looks in Kashmir ki Kali which won her major appreciation.
